5 Surprising Ways Your Mattress Affects Your Sleep And Health

A lack of sleep is responsible for many different problems from being tired to subtle things like increased stressed levels.  On the turn side, having the right mattress or luxury bed with a high-quality mattress can make a big difference – and not always in the most obvious ways.  Here are five examples of how your mattress affects both your sleep and your health. (also, see these tips here)

Improves the quality of life

It might sound grand to say the right mattress can improve your quality of life but that’s because it helps you sleep and there’s no overstating the importance of a good night’s sleep.  When you sleep poorly, you wake tired and sore, stressed and irritable which spills into the rest of the day. Not only that but a poor circadian rhythm is connected with metabolism problems, weight gain or eating poorly.

The right mattress means the right sleep, and this has a huge influence on life.  You feel more awake and alert when you wake, pain levels are reduced, and you feel ready for the day.  A good mattress can also help to ease problems with snoring which often lead to lost sleep for the other person – and more than a few arguments!

Ease aches and pains

Lying down is often the relief at the end of the day, especially if you have chronic pain.  But lying for a period of time means that gravity can push your body in strange ways and create pressure points.  This makes you feel sore and can often wake you up with the pain, causing you to move.

However, a good mattress offers the support you need to help achieve a good sleep posture and ease the pressure on those pressure points.  It helps to distribute weight evenly and can help to ease those minor pains from during the day.

Better sleep means less stress

When we don’t sleep properly, this increases stress and anxiety levels.  An uncomfortable mattress can play a big part in not getting a good night’s sleep which has the knock-on effect of increasing stress and anxiety.  There is a connection between long term sleep problems and conditions such as depression.

But a good mattress on a good quality bed does its bit to help you sleep and this can combat some of the stress and anxiety from life.  It lifts your mood, helps you feel calm and more in control. This then means you are more ready to face the day and what it holds.

Allergies increase with older mattresses

If you have a mattress that has been around for a few years, it is liable to be something of an allergy magnet.  Over time, dead skin cells, body oil, and all those dust particles provide a feeding ground for dust mites and these are a top cause of skin allergies and asthma.  From dry skin to a constant runny nose, sneezing and worse, these little bugs are impossible to see but can infest even a regularly cleaned mattress because their food source is constantly replenished as you sleep.  A new mattress removes this problem.

Poor back support

Over time, even the best mattress will sag and lose the springiness it had as new.  If you have problems with your back, this poor support won’t help it and can even make it worse.  Back pain and sleep disturbance are commonly found together but the right mattress can help ease the problem.  It also means you get better quality of sleep and wake up with less pain and feeling more rested which is very important with a chronic, ongoing condition.
