Hiking

Getting out and about is awesome when you’ve got the time to enjoy the scenery. Hiking offers you the chance to see more of the landscape, as well as covering longer distances. You could even take a pop-up tent with you and enjoy a night or two out in the open. You’ll need a decent pair of hiking boots and a waterproof jacket. A backpack to carry all your drinks and snacks is a good idea too. When you start, it’s worth picking routes that are well-mapped. That way you can make stops at pubs for a well-earned rest!

If you get out and about on your bike, you can travel much greater distances. It’s still slow enough to make the most of all the fabulous views along your route. But you can get deeper into the landscape, or even head further afield to places you haven’t explored before. Cycling is a great exercise for the legs. And you can find a bike to suit every terrain you might come across. Use a sat nav or fitness app to help you navigate one of the thousands of routes. You can also use it to calculate your calorie burn.

Sailing

If you’re lucky enough to live near the coast, you might have regular access to a boat. Learning to sail a boat is great fun, and it gives you the freedom to travel around some stunning coastline. It can also be quite a physical activity. Or maybe you just like the idea of bobbing about on the water? Whether you choose to sail dozens of nautical miles, or you like to float about just off the coast, it’s a great activity.

Segway

Segways are awesome fun for grown-ups. Some areas may have restrictions about where you can use them. But they’re still a great way to get from A to Z. You can buy them privately, or rent them for specific routes around the city or other trails. You might not manage to improve your fitness, but you’ll certainly get out and about on your Segway.

Kayaking

For the ultimate adrenaline-fuelled activity, you could enjoy kayaking along white waters. It’s fast and furious so you’ll need a lot of upper strength to navigate the flow of the water. Of course, there are always much slower streams you can enjoy that require a minimum of effort to enjoy. You might have an open canal that you can canoe along. Or maybe there is a lake you’ve always fancied crossing. For a great arm workout, why not try kayaking?
