Are you sick of disrupted TV reception and not being able to view all channels? If you’re wondering how to get better television reception, here are 5 methods.

The external antenna; the rabbit ears, that pair of foil-wrapped wires on the top of the television that always had to be moved this way and that for just the right picture.

While having come quite a long way, positioning of the antenna still plays quite a bit in the quality of the signal. It takes some work figuring out how to get better television reception.

There can always be a specific reason why there’s a problem with a signal from the antenna you are using. But for the majority of cases, these are the major fixes that will help you obtain a better signal.

  1. Pre-Amp

A very common solution to aiding the antennae signal is an amplifier device. This can be a pre-amp or a distribution amp depending on the situation.

The need for these devices is dependant on a collection of elements. You should examine the list before deciding if you need to use one or both of these pieces of equipment.

Remember, less is almost always more. If too much amplification is applied it will create interference. Interference is another problem that will cause problems with the TV signal as well.

  1. Physical Arrangement

What’s the motto in real estate? “Location, location, location!” That stands the same here. A change of location can make a huge difference when working with the quality of a signal for your TV image.

First, you will want to mount the antennae as high on your home as possible and with as clear a view of the surrounding areas as possible.

Next, you can use broadcasting maps to determine the locations of particular towers in your area. With these, you can properly position your antennae to receive the best signal.

  1. Interference

Several factors can cause interference and degrade an antennae signal:

  • Contact or blockage by metal
  • Improper amplification
  • Cross communication with other devices such as a Wi-Fi router

The best solution for these problems is to run through this as a checklist. Dealing with metal is addressed easily when the antenna is being placed. Simply make sure there are no impeding materials.

  1. Coupling

This is pairing multiple antennae to work together into one signal joiner and eventually into the TV that they are transmitting to. This allows for the combination of both of their power.

This is the term used when two antennae are pointed and focused in the same direction.

There is another way to use two antennae called “Ganging.” This is similar to coupling but rather than teaming up on a single signal, they are directed at two different towers and then run into a joiner, which brings the signal into a single cable.

  1. Quality of Cable

You can have a clear, powerful signal but if that is carried by a low-quality cable, the image will not be as good when it reaches the television. The recommended quality stands at the RG6, an upgrade from the RG59.

If this has piqued your interest and you’re looking for more help with digital antenna installation, why not hire a professional to help you?
