Disclosure:  This post is brought to you in partnership with Catholic Central.  All opinions are my own.

To me, Valentine’s Day isn’t so much about receiving candy, flowers or gifts but a celebration of being able to be with the one you love, and their love for you.  I do get a gift or gifts normally from my husband on that day or we go out to dinner but I have found that our family has shown what love is.  I have had several couples in my life since I was a child that exemplified the meaning of true love.  So I thought I would share that with you.

Grandpa & Grandma Ryan & Dad
This is a very old picture but obviously, we didn’t have digital photos back then so I was happy to find one of them with my Dad.

Lee & Louise Ryan
My grandparents on my Dad’s side of the family were married for 64 years on October 13, 2000, and then my Grandpa Ryan passed on Christmas Day 2000.  Grandpa was 16 when he married my Grandma, and she was 15 going on 16 the December after.  Just a note my Grandpa was 80 when he passed and my Grandma lived another 10 years after him, (at the age of 90) and passed on Christmas Eve of 2010.  I only tell you that because after raising 4 children who gave them 13 grandchildren and in turn they had over 30 great-grandchildren.  Their life wasn’t always easy, but they always loved each other throughout it all.  I remember when I would spend the night and from the guest bedroom I would hear them talking from their bedroom, and then Grandma would pray and they would go to sleep.  I would always love hearing them tell each other “I Love You”, and I hoped one day I would find love such as theirs.

Uncle Lee and Aunt Donna
One of my all-time favorites of my Uncle & Aunt

Lee & Donna Ryan

My Uncle Lee and Aunt Donna are another couple that I have always looked up to.  My Uncle Lee passed away April 8, 2017, and at that time he and my Aunt had been married for 58 years.  Their love for one another was never a question in my mind.  They demonstrated what true love meant and it showed anytime you saw them.

Their love, like my Grandparents, was one that lasted a lifetime.  Again I know it wasn’t perfect, but I do know when it was all said and done, when you thought of them, you knew that was the definition of unconditional love.

Mom & Dad Ryan
One of my favorite photos of my parents.

Dave & Linda Ryan (aka My Parents)

I have been blessed to be raised by two parents that have always loved each other.  They have been married for over 50 years (going on 53 this coming September).  When you see them together you know that they are what true love is.  Through raising 3 kids they now have 3 more kids (married into our family), 8 grandchildren +1 by marriage ranging in ages of almost 18 to almost 29 years old.  They are also Great Grandparents to 4 littles (2 8-year-old great-granddaughters, a 4-year-old great granddaughter and an almost 4-year-old great grandson).

Roger and I

Roger & Becky Willis

My husband and I have been married for over 23 years.  We met in December of 1994 and were married the following September of 1995.  I didn’t realize when my ex-husband left us (my 3-year-old and 2-week old sons) that I would fall in love again.  But I did after a short time of dating, and the rest is history.  I am thankful for my husband.  He loves me for who I am, faults and all.

I remember when I wasn’t sure and my Grandma Ryan (mentioned above) said, “Roger looks at you like your Grandpa Ryan has always looked at me”.  She was right and there is no one else I would rather spend every day with.  He is my best friend!  He loves me when I am most unloveable and is always quick to compliment.  To me, it is like Valentine’s Day every day. (just without the candy and flowers which is more than ok with me).

Although I couldn’t possibly have mentioned everyone that has shaped me into the person I am today, I do have many loved ones that have. I am thankful and appreciative that my life has been a constant with love.

Below is a verse that was my Grandma Ryan’s favorite, and in turn is my favorite so I just wanted to share it with you.

Love is Patient. Love is Kind
