Popular Casino Scenes in Movies

Here are some of the most popular casino scenes in movies, if you can think of any, feel free to put one in the comments.

Maverick

Maverick is a beautifully slapstick movie. It’s a Western comedy and was made in 1994 by Richard Donner. Bret Maverick, played by Mel Gibson, is a poker player and con-artist. He teams up with Annabelle Bransford, played by Jodie Foster, another con-artist, and Marshall Zane Cooper, played by James Garner. Add to that cast actors such as James Coburn, Graham Greene, a host of well known actors from other Westerns who make cameo appearances, and well know names in country music and you know that this movie is going to be a barnstormer.

The best casino scene is the final table at a poker tournament that is being held on a steam boat. Rather than spoil it by telling you any more, download it from You Tube.

Rain Man

The casino scene in Rain Man also has an element of slapstick comedy too it, but then you need to add a certain amount of pathos that underlay the humour for much of the film.

This is one of my favorite movies. Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise do an excellent job being paired in this movie. I need to take time to watch it again; as it has been a few years.

In the scene, Raymond Babbitt, an autistic savant played brilliantly by Dustin Hoffman, and Charlie Babbitt played by Tom Cruise, have come to a Las Vegas casino in order to exploit Raymond’s newly discovered card counting talent to read cards at blackjack. They are embarrassingly successful and win a large sum, though once their counting exploits are discovered they have to leave.

The scene was criticised for the suggestion that it is illegal to count carts in Las Vegas, it isn’t, and you don’t need to be a savant in order to do it.

There is no shortage of casino scenes in James bond movies, in fact you could write a book on them, so selecting the most popular one is impossible, there are so many different opinions. We have chosen a very simple though pivotal one, and one from the first ever James bond movie Dr No, and the one in which Bond speaks his first words, which are spoken to the very first Bond girl played by Sylvia Tench.

Casino

Last but far from least are the many great casino scenes from Martin Scorsese’s epic movie Casino, watch it all, it is probably the best film about casinos that has ever been made.

With the popularity of sites like Lucky Nugget online pokies on the rise, casinos are becoming a prominent film genre. Some other classic which are not on the list are Ocean’s Eleven, Casablanca, The Sting and the famous Cincinnati Kid.
