Traveling is so much fun. You get to learn about new places, eat amazingly delicious food, and explore cultures that are different from your own. There is so much waiting for you, and you do not want to miss a thing. Before charging full-force into vacation planning mode, take a few moments to consider these ideas and how you can incorporate them into your next vacation to help make it more enjoyable.
Stow Your Luggage to Travel Freely
Luggage is a necessity in any travel scenario. Even if you are a seasoned or minimalist packer, you will inevitably have at least a carry-on and a bag, but possibly more. Luckily, you have options when it comes to how you move through a city when you are ready to explore.
The first thing you should do when you arrive in a new city is to stow your luggage in a secure location. Look for luggage storage you can quickly and easily rent out so you can begin exploring right away. This is ideal if you only have a short time in a city before your next train arrives, or you want to wander around a specific area of a city before moving on to another, instead of stowing your luggage at your hotel and then backtracking. Make it easier and securely store your luggage so you do not waste any time experiencing a new place.
Stay Active No Matter Where You Are
If you are an active individual, you probably enjoy moving your body regardless of where you are in the world. A lot of times, people think they have to travel a certain way or be a different person while on vacation. Sometimes, that means not exercising. Unfortunately, when you return home, those decisions cause you to fall out of your normal routines. That does not have to be the case when you travel, however. If you enjoy physical fitness, you can incorporate it into any trip to any destination.
To make it happen, all you need to do is rethink your plans. To start, you can always arrange an active vacation that is filled with walking, hiking, mountain or road biking, water sports, and anything else you can think of. Book a Hawaiian vacation that includes all of the requisite sites along with daily surfing lessons. Or you can travel to Japan and experience its amazing culture before trekking up Mount Fuji. Another option is to book a hotel with a decent gym on-site to get your workout in every morning before the sightseeing begins. You have a lot of options to stay active, healthy, and fit on vacation. All you need is a little planning and intention to make it happen.
Plan Some Downtime
If you do not have the opportunity to travel very often or have limited funds to do so, you might think you need to cram an activity into every second of the day. While that will allow you to see as much as possible in your destination city, it will also leave you feeling tired and maybe a little bit stressed.

Instead of doing too much, rethink how you plan your itinerary. Try to give yourself some downtime every day. Sometimes, the most amazing experiences are found in the quiet of a location. You might take a walk on the beach after breakfast instead of hopping on the first tour bus. Perhaps you will get to witness breaching whales in the morning sun that you would have missed otherwise. Rather than checking every touristy restaurant in your guidebook off of your list, you should ask your hotel staff members for local recommendations and walk there. You will see things and meet new people that you would not have been exposed to otherwise. Relax and appreciate the place you are in to fully experience it.
Make Copies of Your Documents
When you travel, you will have a lot of essential identification and documents with you. They are necessary for everything from your identification to receiving services, and re-entry to your home country to healthcare services. These documents are important, so you should take action and secure them before you even leave home.
Start by making copies of every ID or document you will be traveling with. Next, scan and upload them to a secure cloud that you will be able to access from anywhere in the world. Make sure you know the website, your username, and password to access them. Finally, give a copy to a trusted family member or friend, or place them in a safe within your home that your trusted person has access to.
These essential items should include the following:
- Drivers License
- Insurance cards
- Plane, train, and/or cruise tickets
- Hotel accommodation confirmations
- Passport pages (specifically, your name and photograph)
- Travel itinerary
- Military ID
Make Sure You Can Connect
One of the worst things about having a phone with you at all times is not being able to use it. Before traveling to another country, you need to figure out how you will make phone calls, text your loved ones, use the GPS, and access the internet without paying hundreds of dollars extra, if not more.
The first thing you should do is contact your cell phone provider and ask about their international travel plans. Always ask what those plans include, how much they will cost per day, and whether or not everything you want to do is included. For example, some carriers will allow you to text but not make calls, unless you want to pay more. Ask for a related link on their website so you can review the information yourself before making a decision.
If your carrier is too expensive, you have other options. There are many reputable companies that will provide you with an eSIM or regular SIM card to make international calling much easier and less expensive. All it takes is some planning on your part, and you are set.
Taking a trip should be a fun experience, and it usually is. But when it becomes stressful, there are things you can do to make it more enjoyable. Get out there and explore the world.
