Approaches for Dealing with Severe Acne

Severe Acne

Acne is an inflammatory condition of the skin that causes pimples and spots, especially on the face, back, upper arms, and chest. There are different types of acne, such as blackheads, cysts, pimples, and whiteheads. Although acne is a frequent occurrence for those going through puberty, it can also occur at any age, with studies finding around half of the adult population suffering at some point. Sebaceous glands in the skin usually produce sebum, which carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the skin surface. When this follicle is blocked, it provides an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, which increases the chances for the growth of pimples.

There are several conventional approaches for dealing with severe acne, such as making lifestyle changes and the use of medication. Some of the lifestyle changes which can minimize or prevent acne are finding ways to limit the level of stress you experience in your life.

The more stress you experience, the higher the level of the hormone cortisol, which makes the sebaceous glands more active. Being more mindful, relaxing, exercising, and focusing on wellness significantly reduces levels of cortisol, thereby reducing stress and acne breakouts.

Good Sleep

Getting quality sleep helps your acne getting healed too. If you don’t provide yourself with enough sleep, the body feels unrested and could kick-start the cortisol surge, putting you at risk of getting more acne. Therefore, getting enough sleep should be a priority, but be sure to take all your makeup off before going to bed. Regularity and moderation are good things. Sleeping eight hours a night, eating three healthy meals per day, and regularly drinking enough water could increase the chances of having healthy skin.

Another most useful practice is not picking or squeezing pimples since it will result in more acne infection and can eventually lead to permanent scarring.

Treatment

Treatment of acne depends on how persistent or severe the condition is. Mild acne treatment involves the use of over the counter medications such as soaps, gels, pads, lotions, and creams that are applied to the skin. Lotions and creams are appropriate for sensitive skin, while alcohol-based gels usually give skin dryness, and work better on oily skin. More powerful treatments, like Isotretinoin, work better on severe cystic acne. This is normally a medication that is controlled as it has potentially serious side effects. A consent form must be signed to have an understanding of the probability of risks that could likely occur.

Prevention

Prevention and management of acne are very important, so be sure to wash your face at least twice a day with mild soap and warm water. Pimples should not be scrubbed as it will increase the chances of pushing the infection further down hence causing redness and inflammation. Hands should be washed frequently after applying creams, lotions, or makeup.

If your acne typically appears on the back, chest, or shoulders, you should try to wear loose clothing to allow your skin to breathe. Tight garments such as caps, scarves, and headbands should be avoided, and if they happen to be used, they should be washed regularly.

Conclusion

Sometimes you may end up experiencing more symptoms even after making appropriate lifestyle changes. In this case, seeking medical advice is very important. Your doctor will be able to prescribe topical antibiotics that can reduce inflammation and kill the bacteria that cause pimples. Prescribing topical creams containing ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or retinoic acid is often considered when OTC treatments have failed to show much improvement.

Serious treatment of acne should start when it has the potential of scarring or severely impacting one’s wellbeing. Therefore, it is essential to follow your doctor’s advice and practice a healthy lifestyle.
