Electric vehicles, or EVs, are far better for the planet and often your wallet than traditional gas-powered vehicles. However, there are many considerations to keep in mind before making the switch to an electric vehicle. Read on for a list of factors you will want to contemplate before you purchase your first EV.

Battery Essentials

Like any other electric appliance or cordless gadget, electric cars operate by way of a battery that stores the energy needed to power the vehicle and all its functions. These batteries are stored under the bonnet of every EV car, and the power potential of each electric vehicle depends on the size, the number of cells, and the power capacity of the battery installed. EV batteries need to be charged a full cycle before the operation of the vehicle, and some driving patterns, such as driving uphill, can even provide some power back into the battery from the friction of the road. 

Batteries will eventually run out or require more frequent charging as they wear down and will need to be replaced after a certain number of kilometers or years, usually 16,000 or eight respectively for EV models in the current generation of electric cars. 

Charging Requirements

Electric vehicles vary in how long they take to reach a full charge. When plugged into a higher volt plug or faster charging system, it may take anywhere from eight to sixteen hours for a battery to become fully charged. Typically household outlets may take longer than outlets with increased voltage. 

In public, there are a number of charging ports available for electric vehicles that double as parking spots. Some of these chargers are capable of fuelling a battery up to 80% capacity in under an hour, but not all-electric vehicle models can support this speed. Most often, public charging ports offer power speeds that are faster than at-home methods but with a slightly higher price tag. 

Range Capabilities

The majority of electric vehicles, provided they have a healthy battery, can drive up to 320 km before the battery is depleted. This operating range is also affected by various environmental conditions, such as external temperature, that can put a greater strain on the battery during times of cold and wet weather. It requires more energy to operate an electric vehicle at higher speeds as well, which can impact the expected range of a full EV charge. 

Electric vehicles can be taken for longer road trips, provided they’re planned with charging stations in mind, which can make an EV seem less appealing. However, the majority of drivers navigate a daily commute of less than 30km total, so an electric vehicle is an ideal choice for an everyday vehicle for the vast majority of license holders.

Savings and Rebates

In an effort to incentivize the purchase of electric vehicles, many programs exist that provide discounts and rebates for EV owners. It’s worth looking into in your area if this might apply to you and your desired vehicle. While many federal programs exist, many regions offer their own tax credit programs, and some private organizations may even offer an incentivized trade-in program that will give potential buyers credit for a zero-emissions vehicle in exchange for an older gas-powered car. 

Electric vehicles may be pricier than some gas-powered models at the outset, but it costs much less to operate them on a daily basis because there is no need to fill up at the pump. Electricity prices are significantly lower than gas prices as a whole, and many of the repairs to EVs are comparable to gas-powered vehicles.
