Direct Cremations Vs Traditional Cremations

More and more people are choosing to stage a direct cremation instead of booking a more traditional one these days. There are a number of reasons for this, not least because a direct cremation is one of the least costly ways of holding a funeral that meets the legal standards in place for the disposal of bodies in the UK.

In addition, people like them because they mean very little fuss will be made, allowing people to grieve in sometimes more personal ways than is possible with a traditional service. However, direct cremations are certainly not for everybody. What marks them out as distinctive when compared to traditional cremation services?

To begin with, a direct cremation will have no actual service that will take place. You still need to get the body of the deceased from its current location to the crematorium, and this will often involve the services of a firm of local funeral directors.

That said, there will be no limousines or a hearse to book. The deceased will be placed into a simple coffin and conveyed to the crematorium, where they will be shouldered into the chapel and placed on the catafalque by the funeral directors and then go through to the cremator.

As such, there will be no mourners present and no officiant to oversee the ceremony. The Cremated remains will then be collected by the funeral director at a later date which is in a standard container rather than an urn or something else ornate.

What this means is that many people who would like to attend a service with prayers, hymns, or readings are likely to be disappointed. Other religious rites – and secular ones, too – will not take place.

For some, this is a good reason not to book a direct cremation because they want friends and family members to gather and mourn together. Nevertheless, some people see a direct cremation as an opportunity to postpone their gathering until a later time.

This might mean dealing with the cremation soon after the deceased has passed on and then holding a celebration of life service or a memorial at a later time.

According to Newrest Funerals, a firm that organizes all sorts of cremation services as well as memorial services, some people find that the grieving process is made easier by delaying a get-together of friends and relatives because a cremation that takes place days after the death comes too soon for them to focus on giving thanks for the life of the deceased.

Regardless of the various views that surround direct and traditional cremations, there are further differences to take note of. For example, direct cremations will have no flowers sent to them.

There won’t be anyone to receive them or appreciate them. Some people ask for a donation to a chosen charity instead. Indeed, some people make it clear in their will or funeral plan that they’d like a low-cost, unfussy cremation instead of something that will cost more. Final Expense Direct is a company that provides life insurance coverage to people who are at risk of outliving their savings. The company provides a variety of different plans for different needs and budgets.

Therefore, there will be more left in their estate for those who survive the deceased to inherit and, perhaps, to fund a more celebratory service, if they wish, instead.
