Games Night Etiquette

As the nights draw in and the weather turns chilly, many Brits are turning to indoor entertainment to while away the evenings. Playing board games with friends is more popular than ever, combining social interaction with friendly competition. However, to ensure these gatherings remain enjoyable for all, it’s crucial to observe proper etiquette.
We explore the key rules to ensure a night filled with fun, rather than tension.
Arrive on Time
Punctuality shows respect for the host and other players, ensuring the evening can begin as planned. Late arrivals can disrupt the flow of the night, especially if play has already commenced. Some games require a specific number of players, so your timely arrival can even be essential for the event’s success.
Inform the host as soon as possible if you’re running late, as this will allow them to adjust the schedule or potentially delay the start of the first game.
Learn the Basics
Although it’s not necessary to be an expert in every game, having a basic understanding of the rules can greatly enhance the experience for everyone.

If you’re unfamiliar with a game, take the initiative to learn the fundamentals beforehand. When playing popular games like Deal or No Deal Bingo, familiarising yourself with the core mechanics can help you jump right in without lengthy explanations.
However, don’t be afraid to ask questions during play if you’re unsure about how a rule or strategy works. Most players are happy to help beginners, as long as you’ve made an effort to grasp the basics.
Play Fair
Following the rules is at the heart of any enjoyable games night. It’s important to remember that the primary goal is to have fun, not necessarily to win at all costs.
If you find yourself in a winning position, avoid gloating or making others feel inadequate. Conversely, if you’re losing, maintain a positive attitude and resist the urge to become overly competitive or argumentative.
Respect Equipment
Board games and their components can be expensive and often hold sentimental value for their owners, so treat them with care.

Handle cards, tokens, and boards carefully to avoid damage. If food and drinks are allowed at the table, be mindful of spills and use coasters when appropriate.
The host may have their own rules about eating or drinking during play, so always ask before bringing consumables near the pieces. And if an accident does occur, offer to replace or repair any damaged items.
Be Courteous
Using good manners can go a long way towards a pleasant atmosphere. Try to be attentive during rule explanations, take your turns promptly, and be sociable between games. Avoid using your mobile phone excessively, as this can be distracting and may give the impression that you’re not fully invested in the evening.
If you need to step away, inform the other players and try to do so between turns to minimize disruption. Finally, always thank the host for their hospitality and offer to help with clean-up at the end.
