Re-Creating the Holidays Outdoors
When the holidays roll around, it’s time to start planning your decorations. This year, consider some of these unique holiday outdoor décor ideas that are easy to create and look great. By implementing a few of these, you’ll construct an outdoor space that’s cheerful and beautiful.
Make Your Front Porch Festive

Take the standard topiary on your front porch to an entirely new level when you decorate it just like you do with your indoor tree. Instead of a fabric tree skirt, place your topiary in a wicker basket weighed down with rocks so it can stand up to the elements. Next, wire on some shatterproof ornaments, garland, and ribbon for decorations. For some extra sparkle, string a set of lights on the tree as well. If you don’t have access to an electrical outlet near your front porch, battery-operated lights are a convenient option.
Add Lights to Your Flower Baskets
Just because the weather turns cold and you don’t have any flowers blooming in your hanging flower baskets doesn’t mean that you have to put them in storage. Instead, consider adding some lights to the bottom of the basket and filling the inside with stars or shatterproof ornaments. Not only can you save some money by reusing baskets that you already have, but when spring rolls around, you can also just take the decorations out and plant your flowers.
Create Your Own Giant Ornaments
Giant decorations are very popular right now, and you can easily create your own giant ornaments for a fun look in your outdoor area. Start with a plastic food storage bowl to make the ornament top. Push a screw into the bottom of the bowl for the ornament hook, and use spray paint to make the bowl a festive or metallic color. Place small stones in the bottom of an acrylic globe for weight, and add a string of battery-operated lights for nighttime glow. Finally, create a hinge for ornament topper using duct tape so you can easily access the lights.
Set Up an Area for Holiday Games
If you’re having company over for a holiday party, set up an area where everyone can enjoy some fun holiday games. A few options include Pin the Nose on the Rudolph, which is played just like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, or Santa Limbo, where people do the limbo with a pillow stuffed under their shirts to mimic a Santa belly. Since you want everyone to have a good time, it’s important to keep your outdoor area well-lit with different types of outdoor lighting options.
Make an Evergreen Snowman
Even if you live in a warmer climate, you can enjoy a jolly snowman by creating one with three evergreen wreaths. Simply start with the biggest wreath on the bottom and secure the progressively smaller wreaths on top. You can string some lights around the wreaths for a festive look or leave them bare for a classic style.
This holiday season, use a few of these outdoor décor ideas to bring charm and whimsy to your porch, walkways, front yard, and more.
