Resolve HBO Max’ Offline Viewing’ Not Working In Canada

Being one of the most popular streaming sites, having a subscriber base of 96.1 million, and rivaling Netflix is not an easy feat. Owned by Warner Bros, Max has quite the collection of TV shows and movies airing every now and then. Some of the fan favorites include Hacks, Selena + Restaurant, Velma, My 600-lb Life and more.

However, it can be a huge bummer if you are unable to stream HBO Max in Canada due to technical issues. Surely, such a thing ought to be of the past.

Many users on X, formerly known as Twitter, were seen complaining about how they’re unable to download content on the app in offline mode, which is quite disruptive if you’re traveling. Not only that, but many of them have also reported running into “Check Your Connection” error messages when trying to play any of the previously downloaded content.

You may only play the Downloads once your internet connection is restored, defeating the purpose of watching the content offline. Max subscribers felt annoyed and disappointed with this glitch.

Looking for a workaround? Here are steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue.

Check Max Servers

If you’re unable to play any of your downloaded shows in offline mode, perhaps the streaming app isn’t working in the first place.

For instance, the Max server or the app could be down for maintenance. Check the X page of Max or Downdetector. If this doesn’t work for you, move on to the next one.

Update The Max App

An outdated HBO Max app can cause unexpected bugs. If you’re having trouble downloading content, it could be due to an outdated app. To fix this, update the app via the App Store on iOS or Google Play Store on Android. After updating, try downloading your favorite HBO Max movies again. This could potentially resolve the issue.

Check If You Have An Ad-Free Version

HBO’s download feature is exclusive to ad-free plan subscribers. If you’re subscribed to an HBO plan with ads, you won’t be able to download videos for the offline mode. To resolve any issues with downloading on HBO Max, consider upgrading to the ad-free subscription plan.

Change Download Quality

If your device is running out of storage, it may struggle to download more videos. Besides removing unused apps, you can also lower the streaming quality of the videos to save space.

By default, HBO Max downloads videos in HD so your device can handle them. To reduce the download quality, follow these steps:

  1. Open the HBO Max app and go to “Profile”> “Settings”> “Downloads.”
  2. Choose “Download Quality”.
  3. If “Highest quality” is selected, switch to “Fastest download.” This will allow HBO Max to download videos at a lower quality, resulting in smaller file sizes.

Delete Unnecessary Downloads

Keep in mind, HBO Max allows a maximum of 30 downloads per account. If you’ve reached this limit, you won’t be able to download more videos, causing the download feature to stop working.

You’ll need to delete some of the previously downloaded videos to continue downloading. Here’s how:

  1. In the HBO Max app, go to “Profile”> “Downloads.”
  2. Click on “Edit” and select the videos you no longer need.
  3. Remove them with a single click.
  4. Now, you can look up your favorite videos on HBO Max and download them for offline viewing.

Switch Off Download Over Wi-Fi Only

HBO Max is initially configured to download videos solely via Wi-Fi.

This means that if you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network, you won’t be able to download movies on HBO Max using cellular data. However, if data usage isn’t a concern for you, simply disable the “Download Over Wi-Fi Only” option in HBO Max settings to enable downloads over cellular data.

To change your download settings on HBO Max, follow these steps:

  1. Open HBO Max and navigate to your profile by tapping on the Profile icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Downloads.
  4. Disable the toggle next to Download over Wi-Fi Only.

Renew Your Downloads

To renew your downloads on HBO Max, remember that downloaded videos expire based on HBO’s offline service rules. Specifically, you can keep downloaded videos for 48 hours after you start watching them or for 30 days if you haven’t started watching yet. To refresh or renew your downloads, you may need to redownload the content if it expires.

Follow these steps to renew:

  1. Go to the Downloads in the Max app.
  2. Click on the Expired icon next to the content that has expired.
  3. Select Renew to refresh the download and make it available again.

While HBO Max offers a vast collection of popular TV shows and movies, technical issues can sometimes hinder the viewing experience. Hopefully, using one of the suggested tips can help you resolve this issue.
