*Novella companion to Sanctuary
What if the Biblical End Times unfolded in a way no one told you about and the rapture didn’t happen before the tribulation began…
Aliens have attacked and Rory’s mother is missing, but none of that matters much to him. He’s safe in his apartment complex, has his friends and his twin sister, Hailey. But as supplies start to dwindle, it becomes obvious that he needs to do something to make sure they all survive…even if it means he has to brave going outside through the Shisa and the zombies people have become. As long as they are safe, that’s all that matters, right?

Left Behind for the Hunger Games Generation
In a heart-racing thriller described as Falling Skies meets The Walking Dead, Jennie struggles to find a safe place for what s left of her family. But it seems as though there is no place sacred, no place secure. First the aliens attacked the sun, making it dimmer, weaker, and half what it used to be. Then they attacked the water supply, killing one-third of Earth s population with a bitter contaminate. And when they unleash a new terror on humankind, the victims will wish for death, but will not find it…
When the world shatters to pieces around her, will Jennie find the strength she needs to keep going?
Watch Sanctuary’s Book Trailer
Sanctuary crosses boundaries and borders and incorporates elements of all kinds of action and intrigue, from thriller-like adventure to a post-apocalyptic tale of life after aliens invade. Thus it will delight readers seeking something truly different, while disappointing those who anticipated a shallow, one-dimensional subject and story line.”

Pauline Creeden is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy. In her fiction, she creates worlds that are both familiar and strange, often pulling the veil between dimensions. She becomes the main character in each of her stories, and because she has ADD, she will get bored if she pretends to be one person for too long.

The Walking Dead’s Token Believer
When I first picked up my laptop and started writing Sanctuary, there was a new show coming on television called The Walking Dead. It was picking up popularity, but while writing my zombie story, I avoided watching the show like the plague. I was afraid that watching it would influence my own story, and make it either a rip-off or maybe I’d try too hard to not be like it and end up going the wrong way.
But once I finished the book and edited it a year or so later, I went on a binge, watching the first two seasons of TWD before the third season aired on TV. Now Sanctuary is a take on the apocalypse from a “believer’s” prospective, so I determined that I was unlikely to taint my story by watching the show, and I became a huge fan.
(Spoiler Alert- If you haven’t watched the show, and want to, you might not want to read the rest of this guest post.)
In season 2 of TWD, Rick Grimes has a moment where he’s doubting God… and begs for a sign. Then his son gets shot. This leads him to a place of relative safety for a time, but we don’t really quite get a feel of whether Rick got the sign he was looking for or not. This short glimpse into faith, or lack thereof didn’t do much to affirm or offend.
Then along came Father Gabriel in season 5.
He isn’t perfect. But hey, no one is. We’ve all made mistakes, including Christians, but the only difference is we’re supposed to understand God’s forgiving nature, embrace it, and let others know about it.
“Why wouldn’t you want to die? You don’t deserve to be here. What you did can never be undone.” –Father Gabriel to Sasha in Conquer – the 3/29/2015 episode.
What the what? Seriously? This was about the most offensive thing that this character has said or done. He just contradicted the core Christian belief that God can and does forgive anything and forgets that it ever happened – essentially making it undone.
*Sigh*
And to make matters worse, he says this to a woman who had come to him asking for help.
*Double Sigh*
I am not one for proselytizing, as anyone who is not a Christian and has read my works would know. But for me, this was a tough pill to swallow. Gabriel’s constant lack of faith and wishy-washiness is annoying and probably the worst thing about the show. I hate to say that I keep hoping he’ll soon be zombie bait.
But alas, my son, who has read the comics, says that’s unlikely.
*Triple Sigh*
“Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Christianity has gotten a bad rap because of the way that so many who are brought up to a level of leadership fall into temptation of one kind or another and fail themselves and the people they were supposed to help. Instead of being a representation of Christ, they just end up falling deeper into the pit they were supposed to stay out of. Honestly, it’s harder sometimes to stay on the Christian path than it would be to drift off.
But persisting has always been worthwhile for me.
So it’s not surprising that TWD portrays their token believer as one of those who struggles to stay on the path and loses their way more often than not. I guess that’s why I wrote Sanctuary, was to show the opposite. And life is always about opposites! Chances are that I’m unlikely to give up on the show just because of one character, so if you like watching the show, too – be sure to join the My Zombie Addiction group on Facebook! It’s where I hang out to talk about the show and other cool stuff.
