Is Squash Ketogenic?

If you are on a ketogenic diet, does it mean you need to cut squash out of your diet? A question that comes in anybody’s mind who loves squash.

The answer, however, is a bit tricky.

Keto diet is all about numbers. The foods that you are consuming during this diet have to be constantly checked to see how they affect the daily keto macros. This diet is very low on carbs. Your daily recommended carb intake is below 20 grams. Carbohydrates make only 5% of your daily calorie intake when you are following a keto diet.

Many vegetables are high in carbohydrates and are therefore avoided in a keto diet.

So, where does squash stand?

Is Squash Keto?

The problem with this question is that squash is a very diverse kind of vegetable. There are many varieties of squash. And to say if you can eat them, while on the keto diet, will take research and a trial and error process.

Which Squashes Are Keto-friendly?

The first squash that is perfect for the ketogenic diet is zucchini, which is summer squash. In fact, many keto-friendly recipes use zucchini noodles instead of actual pasta.

On the other hand, butternut squash is rich in carbs. One cup serving has 21 grams of carbs. So you have to keep it out of your keto plan. You can substitute it with Kabocha squash, it has just 9 grams of carbs in one cup.

You may want to avoid acorn squash, as well. Although it is a fall favorite, with the highest fiber count, it is high in carbs and, therefore, not recommended for keto dieters.

Spaghetti squash is a good option in winter squashes for keto dieters. As it is low in carbs, approximately 8 grams in one cup serving.

To summarise, winter squashes should be avoided on your regular keto menu. But every once in a while, you can enjoy it and still stay on track.

Ketogenic Diet Rundown

The ketogenic diet, or more commonly known as the keto diet, is high fat and low carb diet. Which helps you to lose weight by forcing the body in a state of ketosis.

Ketosis is a natural state of metabolism. In ketosis, the body produces ketones from fats and uses them for energy instead of carbs.

Under a normal diet,  when we eat carbs, the body produces insulin and glucose. The body uses glucose to produce energy and stores fat. But in a keto diet, fats are burned to be used as a source of energy. A Keto diet helps you lose weight and improve your health.
