How to Learn Poker as a Beginner Gambler

There’s a reason why the job outlook for gambling service workers is expected to increase by 24% over the next decade. More people than ever before are discovering the fun that comes with classic casino games.

And, few casino games are as iconic as poker. If you want to learn poker rules, then you’re in the right place. In this poker tips guide, we’ll give you a quick breakdown of the basic rules. That way, you can get out there and start playing!

Basic Texas Hold’em Poker Rules

For starters, you need to know about blinds to play poker. These are forced, rotating bets that begin at the beginning of every round. They’re important because they force the game along. There’s a large blind and a small blind.

The two players to the left of the dealers must pay the blind. Then, after the round, it shifts to the left. The dealer then deals everyone two-hole cards. These are cards that only apply to you.

After the cards are dealt, there’s the first round of betting. You can either bet, check or fold. Check is essentially skipping the betting phase. As long as everyone checks, the game proceeds.

But, if someone places a bet, then it must be called or raised. Otherwise, you need to fold. Once the first round of betting is up, the dealer will put down three river cards.

These are communal cards that can apply to any hand. Remember, the objective is to get the highest hand ranking. These are the hand rankings from worst to best:

  • High card
  • Two pair
  • Three of a kind
  • Straight
  • Flush
  • Full house
  • Four of a kind
  • Straight flush
  • Royal flush

After the round of betting, the dealer will put down another card. This is followed by more betting.

This happens until there are five cards on the table. Then, everyone reveals their hand. The person with the highest hand ranking wins.
