Is There A Formula To Winning More?

Winning More

The effect that winning has on our brains is more substantial than many of us might initially have imagined. “Winning increases testosterone, which in turn increases the chemical messenger dopamine, and that dopamine hits the reward network in the brain, which makes us feel better” (Ian Robertson). Success alters the chemistry of our brains, making us more focused, confident and competitive. It is a feeling that can easily become addictive, making us more eager to achieve our personal goals, whether that be fitness goals, career goals or financial goals, and to attain even greater success overall.

Does Success Make Us Happy?

Whilst it is normal to strive for success in areas like education, work, fitness, and personal relationships, it is questioned whether or not success really leads to happiness. According to a review of numerous recent studies by the Psychological Bulletin, it has in fact been found that happiness leads to greater success in life, rather than success necessarily leading to happiness. The studies revealed that people who are happy proactively seek out new goals and aspirations to commit to, which reinforce their positive emotions.

The Impact Of Failure

Studies have also revealed that failure has far less of an impact on our brains than success does. After failure, there is actually not much change in brain activity, but when we do well at something, our brains retain the information and knowledge we have used for further use in future situations. As such, as well as having the ability to make us more focused, confident and competitive, success also has the ability to make us smarter. Think Of Yourself As A Winner

Believing in yourself as a winner is thought to play a crucial part in succeeding. A study by the University of Cambridge found that men who simply believe that they have beaten another male in the competition get boosted testosterone levels and an increased sense of personal value. As testosterone fuels competitiveness and a sense of power, it is more likely that you will in fact go on to win and achieve success.

Other Ways To Achieve Success

Along with self-belief, people who successfully achieve their goals also have a clear understanding of the path they must take to reach their final destination. They also build a support system for themselves, like getting a personal trainer to help you with your weight loss journey, or language tutor to help you achieve your goal of learning more French.

It is also key to be specific about your goals. If, for example, your goal is to lose weight, then set yourself a realistic number of pounds to have shifted by a certain date.

Another highly important factor is recognizing your own procrastination. If you catch yourself losing focus and putting things off, you need to snap yourself back into action to maintain your progress towards success.

The formula to winning more appears to largely focus on believing that you are capable, as well as having a good plan of action. The more you win, the more you will succeed overall.
