Life Doesn’t Have to Be So Serious with the Producer| Writers of Bad Moms
8 Things I learned while listening to Producer Susan Todd, Writers/Directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, from Bad Moms.
Ever since I came back and actually while I was in LA for the Bad Moms Junket I keep wondering when did life get so serious? Between watching the movie and spending time with the Producer Susan Todd, and Writers/Directors Jon Lucas & Scott Moore that question keeps coming back. I can’t really explain why that all of the sudden came to mind but I can share what I learned during our interview.
- Jon & Scott’s inspiration came from their own wives. They have been writing together for 16 years, so their families are very close. They each have 2 kids so they know what it is like to be a parent.
- Expectations for Mom’s have become so irrational that it would be great if Mom’s could do a bit less and just enjoy their families and life a bit more.
- One message of the movie is that you do not need to be perfect.
- Susan Todd has been making movies for 30 years, from the time she got out of film school.
- Jon & Scott’s agencies tried to talk them out of making the movie. They were also told the movie would be better if it was Bad Parents and would reach more audiences. This was not their goal so they continued with their ideas.
- They interviewed many women for the parts, but the ones that were not mothers didn’t quite understand how a child would act. They would mention they have a dog or that their child would not do ‘such and such’. This made Jon & Scott realize that real Moms would be more realistic to the parts and luckily they did end up with all real life Moms for the parts.
- Kristen Bell was an obvious Kiki since she is so sweet, bouncy and fun. Christina Applegate was their obvious Gwendolyn because even Scott mentioned he was a bit ‘scared’ of her.
- When asked how they were going to do a “Mom movie” rated R this was their response, “It’s like motherhood is an R-rated job. Motherhood is not PG. It’s certainly not G. Motherhood is dirty. There’s a lot of stuff. It’s messy. It’s not pretty and clean and your hair looks great. It’s like it’s a battle. (said by Scott).
I myself had quite a few ‘Bad Mom’ moments while raising my kids. I can say honestly (because he doesn’t read my blog), that my oldest was the most challenging to raise. We always seemed to butt heads, he was and still is strong minded not to mention he had a tough time since his Dad left us when he was 3 years old and his brother was 2 weeks old.
I made excuses for him because of what he had gone through. So many times that I look back and wish I would have done a few things differently. I joked for the longest time that when I died I wanted on my tombstone, “Here lays A’s Mom, she raised him to adulthood and they both lived.” So I have lived with guilt for a long time. Although he is still “A”, he never abused drugs, was never in any legal trouble, or over consumed alcohol during his teen years. He is now a husband and father of his 5 1/2-year-old step-daughter (although he doesn’t see her as anything else but his daughter), and his 1-year-old little boy. So although I experienced a LOT of bad mom moments while raising him, we are both ok and we both lived.
That is where I could relate to so much of our interviews and the movie itself. I wish back then it was ok to be a “Bad Mom” at times and allow myself to just roll with it. You see we aren’t all “Bad Moms” but we are allowed sometimes to just cut loose and not put so much pressure on ourselves. Easier said than done I know.
I will be writing my no spoiler review for Bad Moms at the end of next week, make sure to watch for it.

In this new comedy from the grateful husbands and devoted fathers who wrote The Hangover, Amy has a seemingly perfect life – a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However, she’s over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she’s about to snap.
Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities – going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun, and self-indulgence – putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.
