3 Causes Of Damp To Watch Out For In Your Home

Damp problems can be very expensive to deal with, but if you leave them, mold will start to grow and that is dangerous to your health. Once the damp sets in, it’s so hard to get rid of and unless you deal with the root cause, it will keep coming back again and again. That’s why it’s important that you know how to prevent it in the first place because that’s a lot easier than dealing with the problem once it’s already happened. These are some of the most common causes of damp that you need to watch out for in your home.

Bad Ventilation

Bad ventilation in certain areas of the house can quickly lead to damp problems. This is most common in the kitchen and the bathroom where you get a lot of steam from cooking or showering. If there is nowhere for that steam to go, it will settle on the walls and start to seep in. Over time, you will end up with damp walls and mold. The good news is, poor ventilation is dealt with quite easily. Just opening a window is often enough to solve the problem, but that isn’t always ideal in the winter. Extractor fans are another simple way to get rid of all of that steam and stop it from settling on the walls. You should also invest in a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air.

Roof Damage

If your roof gets damaged, water will start to leak in and run down the walls, causing a damp problem throughout the house. If left unchecked, this is going to be incredibly expensive to sort out, so you need to keep on top of roof maintenance. Get up there and check it every six months or so and if you notice any loose or damaged tiles, call a roof repair company right away and have them fix it. It will be simple to fix a few loose tiles but if you leave it and the damage gets worse, it will be a much bigger job. You need to make sure that you check the roof after, particularly bad weather as well because it can cause some serious damage and leave holes in the roof for rainwater to leak in.

Leaking Pipes

If your pipes are damaged and they start to leak, all of that water is going to soak into the walls and cause damp. It’s fairly easy to spot damp caused by leaking pipes because the bottom of the wall will be wet, but the top should still be fairly dry. If you notice any wet areas like this, you need to hire a plumber right away and have them fix the leaks. If you neglect these smaller leaks, your damp problem will quickly get out of control and you risk the pipes bursting in the future, which is going to cause you some big problems.

If you can stay on top of these issues around the home, you can avoid any costly damp problems in the future.
