Advice For First Time Dog Owners

Dog Owners

Getting your first dog can be an extremely exciting occasion! They will become a new little (or big depending on the breed you choose) members of your family.

Although it is a fun, exciting time, you need to make sure that you are 100% prepared for everything that comes with owning a dog. Caring for a dog can take up a lot of your time, and there are a few things that you may not know if you have never taken care of a pet before. To help you and your new canine friend get off to a good start together, here are a few things you should know:

Make sure you have all the essentials ready before you bring your dog home

If you can, you should make sure that you have all the essentials that you need to care for a dog at your home before you pick up them up and bring them home. They will need a food and water bowl, toys that can keep them amused and help to calm them down in their new surroundings, a bed where they can sleep, a collar with your details on in case they get lost, and a harness and a lead so that you can take them out on walks straight away.

Having everything you need ready will help your dog to get settled faster so that you can start to build a great relationship.

Ensure that you can give them the time and care they need

Before you get a dog, you should ensure that you have enough time to give them. Owning a dog is a huge responsibility. Many dogs can find being alone for long periods of time stressful and lonely, so if you work full time and don’t have anyone to spend time with them in the day, it might not be a good idea to commit to one.

You also need to make sure that you have time to walk your dog and spend time playing with them so that you can build up a bond with them and start to get them into a routine.
