Newborn Outings: Things You Can Go Without!

Newborn Outings: Things You Can Go Without!
Those first outings with your newborn baby are so precious, showing your little one off to the world can be so exciting. Getting out of the house can be really daunting, though, with all the what ifs to worry about. What if your baby gets hungry, what if they need a nappy change, what if you can’t settle them, or what if they throw up all over their clothes? There really is so much to think about but you can’t let it put you off. You and your new baby need to get out there and meet people and see the world. To give you a hand, we’ve compiled a list of all the things you should take with you on an outing. We can’t guarantee it will cover every eventuality, but it should get both of you through the experience in one piece.

1. Two changes of clothes

It might seem excessive but you just don’t know what will happen. All it takes is one leaky diaper and you’re down one set of clothes, if you then have a throwing up incident, you’ve gone through your spare clothes already. It really does make sense to be prepared so that you can keep your baby clothed in every eventuality. It’s a good idea to keep the spare clothes in a zip-locked plastic bag too. That way, if you have an incident the old clothes can just be put straight inside them and sealed up, all the yucky sick or poo will be contained.

2. A change of clothes for you

You want to look your best for your outing too. Don’t let a bit of throw-up ruin your look by packing yourself a spare top, just in case.

3. Milk

How you do this will depend on how you are feeding your baby. If you are breastfeeding, you clearly don’t need to pack a thing, you are carrying your milk supply around with you. You might want to pack a cover-up in case your baby does need feeding while you are out if you feel uncomfortable with breastfeeding in public, but remember there is absolutely no requirement for you to hide away unless you want to. If you bottle feed, take some bottles with the formula pre-measured out. You should also take your boiled and cooled water in a sterilized thermos so that you can mix it with the formula when it’s milk time.

4. A snack and drink for you

Being a new mother is hard, especially if you are not getting enough sleep. It is important that you keep your blood sugar levels up and that you are getting the nutrients that your body needs to get you through the day. Pack yourself a nice healthy snack and make sure you have a drink on hand to keep you hydrated.

Pack some muslin squares a burp cloths so that you can quickly wipe up any spit up or any other mess that your baby might make. Trust us, these things are lifesavers, you can never have too many.

6. Nappies and Nappy bags

The chances are, that at some point during your outing your baby will soil their nappy, so you will definitely need to have spare diapers in your bag and I like organic products which I found on https://www.starwalkkids.com baby section. Have a pack of wipes in there too so that you can quickly clean your baby up and nappy bags so that you can dispose of the old nappy responsibly. It is not fair to leave that horrid stuff that comes out of your baby for the rest of the world to see and smell. You’ll definitely want to bag it and throw it.

7. Disposable changing mats

Sometimes, facilities designed for changing babies are not great. Carry around some disposable changing mats so that you can change your baby wherever you are.
