Residential Application of LED Tube Lights

Application of LED Tube Lights

LED tubes were the first ever innovation by lighting manufacturers during the early 2000s which paved the way for high end lighting fixtures with LED. These tubes were an effective replacement for fluorescent tubes and were introduced as retrofit LED tubes.

The first ever retrofit kit was for G5 and G13 fluorescent bulb bases. The first ever tubes were called T5, T8 and T12 LED tubes.

Specification of retrofit LED tubes

The idea of retrofitting was essential to judge the outcome of this kind of lighting without causing any changes in the fixture. The retrofit designs are of three kinds:

UL Type A

UL type A light is ballast operated. The LED retrofit kit is installed easily without any variation in the process. It does not require any technical assistance and is easily more efficient than fluorescent tubes. Although one major drawback of installing newer tubes on older fixtures is that the ballast might give up and the maintenance costs will increase.

UL Type B

UL type B is a bit advanced, more efficient retrofit tube. It requires rewiring of the fixture and it does not operate on ballast. Most UL Type B tubes are double ended as they have neutral and live wires on either ends, which at times could be on the same side as well. It does not require the ballast and uses an LED driver. The rewiring requires technical assistance but these tubes are quite successful as they work very efficiently if there are no voltage fluctuations.

UL Type C

UL type C is a bit advanced and better alternative for retrofitting in both residential and commercial spaces. Due to higher demand the light must be powerful, bright and efficient in offices, schools, hospitals etc. It operates on an LED driver which can power up to 12 LED tubes in a single room. Type C tubes are super efficient in many ways as they are dimmable, allow remote control options etc.

Advantages of installing LED tubes

Retrofit LED tubes paved a new way for many better LED light fixtures nowadays for various applications but regardless these lights are in high demand because of how convenient they are. In homes, the lighting needs are often met by fancy fixtures but a simple layout can also make use of LED tubes. Retrofitting old fluorescent fixtures is always easy with the available options and yields many benefits over traditional fixtures.

The installation process is easy, affordable and provides the consumer with:

  • Better illumination

LEDs provide better illumination than traditional lighting which is proven as the light is soft and amiable. It appears glowy and has a diffused pattern. The bright light is its biggest quality which can be set for ambiance. LED tubes have switchable correlated colour temperatures or it can be selected upon purchase. It falls on a Kelvin scale ranging from 2500K to 6000K which produces warm yellow, bright yellow, white and daylight like light. For residential applications the recommended temperatures fall between 2500K to 3500K as it produces a warm ambiance.

  • Energy efficiency

These lights are highly energy efficient due to their design and other features. They allow the consumer to have a certain control over the kind of lighting they are trying to achieve. In homes, energy consumption varies but lighting being a primary need requires a layout which is efficient and environment friendly as well. These lights have low energy consumption and can run on lower voltages or solar panels. The beam angle of LEDs is fixed which creates a distinctive lighting pattern and does not waste any light in the surroundings. The light hits the point of illumination and has adjustable angles for varying elevations.

  • Environment friendly

LED light manufacturers produced this keeping in mind the stakes of conventional lighting which is basically fluorescent tubes containing mercury; a harmful chemical and global climate. LED tubes on the other hand do not contain any chemical source which can eventually harm the humans or environment. These diodes produce light through energy which is much safer as it does not interact with ultraviolet rays, works on green-lighting technology and is easy to dispose once it expires.

The light produced is also glare free and is reported to reduce the complaints of headaches and migraines despite continuous exposure.

In conclusion, LED tubes are a safer, efficient and smarter approach towards a healthy lifestyle. In residents, the need is not exactly dire but they are usable for improved lighting design which also helps in reducing carbon footprint. Also in any accidental or emergency situations with electricity these lights are safe and provide backup. They are sustainable and provide long term benefits as they do not require frequent maintenance in order to work efficiently.
