Habits to Help with Anxiety

If you struggle with anxiety, you know how taxing it can be to deal with. Though everyone can benefit from wellness practices, people who struggle with anxiety disorders often find that small changes in daily behavior can be extremely valuable. 

Though anxiety is a very common mental health disorder, psychologists are still discovering new ways that individuals can alleviate symptoms. One of the best ways that people can help prevent and process uncomfortable moments of anxiety is to practice productive daily practices. 

Emotional Check-ins

Throughout your day, take a moment to reflect on your current emotional state. Are you feeling content? Stressed? Somewhere in between? By doing this regularly, you get to know your daily highs and lows to be better able to regulate them. It’s a simple way to get to know yourself better, and can be done in as little as a few minutes. 

Some people like to explore these emotional check-ins in more concrete ways. This could include journaling, drawing out a visual representation of your emotions, or even speaking to a loved one briefly. Trying out different ways that you can connect to your current emotional state will help you find what works for you. 

Meditation

On a similar, but different note, practicing guided meditation has been proven to help individuals with anxiety. When done regularly, it can help you connect to a calmer state, and block out daily stressors. There is a plethora of meditation resources available online for free, and even just 10 minutes a day can result in lasting changes. 

The beauty of meditation is that it gives you an opportunity to relax, let go and breathe. Don’t worry if at first you find your mind wandering – that’s perfectly normal. Meditation is meant to help you from the state you’re currently in. 

Exercise and Healthy Eating

Though implementing healthy eating practices and exercise is easier said than done, it can be a great way to reduce anxiety. Endorphins that are released during exercise are proven to increase our overall mood, and the physiological response connects you to yourself on a deeper level.

In current society, exercise has a reputation to be about changing our bodies and there’s a certain intensity connected to it. In actuality, the best kinds of exercise for anxiety are activities that you truly enjoy. Talk to Someone

Even if you implement all of these daily practices, anxiety can still linger and be tough to deal with. Speaking with a licensed therapist can be a great way for you to learn new tools to cope, and also give you the chance to reflect on what’s working for you as you tackle it. Therapists are also an amazing opportunity to talk to someone about feelings you might not feel comfortable sharing with people in your life, and feel seen in a non-judgemental space.
