Imagine going on a trip with your family where you can breathe fresh air, fish to your hearts content all while enjoying the outdoors.  If making memories with your family is at the top of your list, then Devils Lake should go hand and hand with your memories. Covering over 160,000 acres it has hundreds of miles of shoreline to do your fishing trip from. One of the best parts of fishing (in my opinion) besides hauling in ‘the big one’, is when your bobber goes up and down. There is just something about the excitement that fishing brings when you love the sport.

Devils LakeAbout Devils Lake

Devils Lake is known as one of the best places to fish in North Dakota.  This lake is the largest body of water in North Dakota and holds a large quantity of walleye, white bass, and even northern pike call it their home. You will also learn that Devils Lake is known as the “Perch Capital of the World“.  So, if you enjoy catching perch as our family does, you will really enjoy fishing here too. If you and your family enjoy going out onto the water and do not have your own boat, there are boat rentals available. There is also a dozen or so bait shops close by to get what you need for your fishing excursion. Possibly you are new at fishing and want the best experience possible, then a fisherman guided tour is a great idea. Even if you are a seasoned fisherman but haven’t fished at Devils Lake before a tour guide would be a great experience too. You can choose from open water or ice fishing depending on the time of year. There are 16 fishing tour guides available to choose from on their site, so you are sure to find the perfect fit for your trip if you choose.

Family Fun Activities (besides fishing)

So possibly the WHOLE family isn’t thrilled with the thought of just fishing for your whole trip like you are.  Don’t worry you can get all your fishing in and the family activities. The two places that are fun and popular are at Sullys Hill National Game Preserve and Grahams Island State Park.

Sullys Hill National Game Preserve: Enjoy the visitor center which has various displays and outdoor classrooms for conservation or wildlife studies or programs.  Your family will enjoy the outdoor amphitheater which features environmental, historical and cultural programs. There are hiking and nature trails with informative stops along the way.  You can take the self-guided auto tour to see the wildlife on your own. In the winter months, you can cross country on the ski trails for a wonderful time of making memories. There are special tours for groups by appointment also.  Enjoy birdwatching? There are several birdwatching and photography opportunities. Sullys Hill National Wildlife Refuge has overlooks-viewing Devils Lake and varied habitats.

My favorite vacation was to Bear Mountain New York in the Hudson River Valley. It’s beautiful country with lots to do. I really enjoyed the zoo on the mountain. The quaint villages nearby had great restaurants and unique shops.
